Abstract
To provide a fundamental data for improving the quality of laboratory animals, histopathological examination serological assay microbiological and parasitic examination were carried out for mice (C3H, C57BL/6, BALB/c, and ICR) and rats (SD, Wistar) produced in a Barrier system. Histopathologically, the thickness of alveolar wall, infiltration of lymphocytes in peribronchiole, and mild to moderate interstitial pneumonia were often observed in the lung, regardless of age or strains. Focal necrosis of hepatocyte and mild infiltration of granulocytes in sinusoid or around bile duct were occasionally observed in mice and rats. Mature teratoma was also observed in ovary of a twenty weeks old female C57BL/6 mouse. In the serological assay, MHV, Sendai virus, and M. pulmonis infections were extensively occurred, specially in old ages. No pathogenic bacterium and Barasite was observed in several vital organ such as liver, kidney, spleen and lung and cecum. We suggest that more thorough prevention and control for pathogenic microbial infection should be achieved in the barrier system.
